Information for Michigan courts
This page is for judges, magistrates and court staff anywhere in Michigan. It explains what happens after a court orders a basic driver improvement course, what proof the court gets back, and how to reach us. It is not a sales page and it makes no claim about how any court treats any course.
How an order works
Under MCL 257.602b(8), a court shall order a driver to complete a basic driver improvement course once that driver is responsible for 3 or more civil infractions under MCL 257.602b(1), the hand-held mobile device section, inside a 3-year period. The same subsection sets the deadline as "within a reasonable time as determined by the court", so the date on the order is the date, and it is the one we tell the student to work to.
The driver enrols here under their own account, pays for the course themselves and works through it at their own pace. There is no class to book, no seat to reserve and no date to attend, so an order can be complied with the week it is issued. The student can record the court, the case number and the deadline when they enrol, and that is what puts the court reference on the certificate described below.
A court-ordered course is not the Secretary of State's points programme. MCL 257.320d(17) says a driver ordered by a court takes the course whether or not they are eligible under that section, and that the points are still entered. The court-ordered course page sets that out for the driver, with the statute cited line by line.
What the court receives
A student who finishes gets a certificate of completion as a PDF, straight away. It carries the name the student enrolled under, the course, the date they finished and a verification id.
When the student recorded a court and a case number, the certificate also carries a court reference block naming both, so a clerk can match it to a file without a covering letter.
The student can forward that PDF from their own account, and when a clerk address is on the matter the certificate can be sent to it directly instead. Either way, any certificate can be checked at /verify/<id> with no account and no login: the page confirms the id, the holder, the course and the completion date, and says so plainly if a certificate has been withdrawn.
